Those of you who think that contemporary death metal is only capable of being lethally boring should really check out Australia's Profound Lore Records and in particular two bands on the roster: Portal and Impetuous Ritual. Modern death metal is a pretty single-minded rat race but Impetuous Ritual, the subject of this review, simply aren't bothered with all this nonsense.

Relentless Execution Of Ceremonial Excrescence reminds me of the time when I was exposed to death metal for the very first time. Here is a band that makes the most evil, hellish, dirty racket imaginable - music that upon first listen seems like random noise. Blasts, maniacal grunts, an oppressive, abhorrent atmosphere, tempo changes as predictable as the snoring of an alcoholic - its all here and it is beautifully, ecstatically erratic and chaotic. Impetuous Ritual specialises in immense shock value of the kind that has long been missing from the ultra-technical, triggered, compressed death metal offerings that we are so used to today. As a result of all of this fucking chaos, the seasoned death metal fan will be pleased to discover a familiar sensation - that of the gradual, slow discovery of sense behind extremity. This is a deliberate deconstruction, or if you prefer, a deliberate mind-fuck - but it does have structure and meaning. Impetuous Ritual rarely follow death metal stereotypes while at the same time rediscovering the very essence of the genre.

Relentless Execution Of Ceremonial Excrescence is like a reinvigorating stroke. Extreme music of this kind should not be all about how physically fit the musicians are. It's about the destruction of all order. Therefore, this album represents a true logical step forward in this genre: a musical statement, not a workout for the musicians.
