Imagine you've taken Kalmah's swamps, mixed them up with Korpiklaani's sauna party, added Omnium Gatherum's melodeath vibes, and moved two countries south to relocate your activities to the Latvian swamps. To be perfect, you need to take something local: try to sing in the same way as Pēteris Kvetkovskis from Skyforger between Latviešu Strēlnieki and Pērkoņkalve. Then borrow an intro from Druun's folk-inspired doom. But are you happy with that? No - you've been inspired by our Florida representative and his Romanian partner in crime to possess a little Botanist. Since it's hard to play like Botanist, though, you just adopt the idea to borrow the Latin names of flora and fauna as stage names.
This album has five songs mixing folk and a bit of a different interpretation of melodic death metal (the Finnish version), inspired by Omnium Gatherum, Mors Principium Est, and even darker progressive death metal in an Obscura-meets-Gojira mixture with some Be'lakor. The last song on this EP is a neofolk-inspired song a la FEJD or Otyg syrup. The instruments are well done here, and the vocals as well; the lyrics are based on Latvian pagan deities who dwelt (or still dwell) in the swamps. Florida has Rougarou - well, Europe has its own versions of swamp deities.
I remember in my teenage days I used to watch VH1 Classic, and they had a program about "one-hit wonders." To me, this band might stay as such: one EP, no reviews online, no promotion on Facebook, just a band that might stay forever drowned in a swamp. In these pandemic days, it's hard to promote new music live, but bands can still do more online. I believe that they could have a higher profile, because their music is not bad; re-record in English and you might get a few more followers, but that's up to the band.
Now let's listen to these and dream about if Dogsnouts were real.

If you are unlucky swamp can take homeless man, lucky business man, priest or Volodimim Putman from Cremlin. They just take people sometimes

Cool review, man, and big thank you to the Editor obviously. I vaguely remember you pointing this EP out to me way back for the Clandestine Cuts but I must have overlooked it because it definitely sounds interesting. If that was the case, I am sorry, sometimes all the recommendations from different users/labels/bands in my inbox overwhelm me. But, on the bright side, we now have a review of this

You got my attention by namedropping Druun, because Veļu Laiks is one of my favorite albums of 2019. But unfortunately, this doesn't live up to my expectations at all. I find the clean vocals in combination with the Latvian language pretty horrible most of the time, and occasionally even unintentionally comic. But maybe that's just me and my limited enthusiasm for folk metal in general. For lack of a better metaphore, I'd say that there are better swamps to drown in. Nice review though.

Written by Starvynth on 04.11.2021 at 21:05 I am not fan whit Latvian language in vocals as well, skyforger dis it, few bands did it, but in today's interpretation context, English is key to use God side of schengen, other wise Latvija only, same goes to all slavic hm bands from Poland, CZ, Svk... Folk metal is ok to sing in native language as well I think, now it's up to this band.
