8.9 and - presumably - dropping since you brought it up. I'll give it a listen asap; going in without any expectations...

I can settle with the rating now This is turning out to be another excellent piece of art, albeit with slight unstableness in quality. This album seems to have one of the best finishes in recent memory with the last two tracks (excluding the bonus).
Heavy, progressive, atmospheric. Awesome.

This sounds wonderful a sight better than the previous album. The intro to 'You I Need' reminds me of the band Camel.

Listened to it yesterday, and I'd say 'atmospheric' is the best description. Not as heavy as I expected, but also not as cheesy as Skyforger...it reminded me more of Eclipse at most parts.

By all means this isn't their best album, but it's a huge step in a direction that caters a little more to my personal tastes. The balance of growls and cleans (not to mention the chick vocals) kept me interested and the songwriting was relatively captivating on its own. I surprised myself with how much I actually enjoyed this.

Troy, just out of curiosity - which of their albums do you like most? I'd say Lakes but I might be wrong... ;-)

Lakes is a close second to The Karelian Isthmus for me.

It seems to me that this band has the ability to create masterpieces even when they lack inspiration!!! It sounds like Skyforger (which is not something bad) and the new characteristic is the use of female vocals in some songs. I didn't expect something different and it really satisfies me! The only surprise for me was the "Song of The Sage" which sounds to me like Blind Guardian with Joutsen's vocals... Great song...

I began listening to Amorphis after Skyforger came out in 2009. My first impression was, "How have I not listened to this band before?" I remember listening to the band in the past, but dismissed them as merely average -- perhaps their pervious releases just weren't my cup of tea. Then Skyforger came out. I was blown away with the band's ability to mix many genres seemlessly, and with a brilliant sense of technical prowess I might add.
The Beginning of Times sounds much like Skyforger, blending together many elements of metal including Death, Melodic Death, Heavy Metal, and (dare I say) Symphonic Metal. There are also moments of folk and rock -- all with just enough of that Finnish sound we've all come to know and love. All-in-all this is a metal heads wet dream. The fact that many death metal bands these days are trying to force clean vocals into their songs (usually coming off as more of a gimic, rather than a geniune addition to the music) annoys me. Not with Amorphis. The moments of beauty and brutality are pieced together with great care and ultimately sound seemless in a way that only some bands can accomplish -- Opeth immediately comes to mind.
Overall, I would say that if you enjoyed Skyforger, then you will like The Beginning of Times. In fact, I'll be so bold as to say you'll love it!

I does not sound like Skyforger that much IMO, more like a mix of all the last albums (though the Skyforger has a cameo appearance ). I'm starting to like it a lot, can't get the melodies out my head.
Anyone else noticed the high pitched growls at the end of "Crack In A Stone"?

This is a good album....however it does get quite repetitive after a while. There isn't much to distinguish the songs apart which can be a bit of a problem. But there's no denying the quality aspect of the music.

Five people rated this 1, "worst ever". Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you?
Edit: it's a 7.5 btw, but I give it a 7 because "Skyforger" is better.

The more I listen to it, the more I'm addicted to it!
Highlights: MERMAID, CRACK IN A STONE, THREE WORDS, SONG OF THE SAGE and MY ENEMY.
I hope they keep it like this until forever...

At first listen I was amazed by the album, but now after 4-5 listenings some of the songs are boring or just too much for me. 8,5 it is.

No I don't want an orchestra nor anything. I just think that the composition is poor on this album, it's a personal opinion. The previous 3 albums were much better. Especially Eclipse.
