Considering where they were a decade ago, Avenged Sevenfold have certainly had one of the more intriguing career trajectories of the 2000s mainstream metal icon bands.
Leave any expectations you have from Avenged Sevenfold at the door, because Life Is Just A Dream… is pushing the band’s boundaries so much that it cannot be anything but divisive. It is one of the most ambitious and surprising albums of the year, and it is impressive how over-the-top it gets, regarding music genres blending together. To claim that its influences are broad would be an understatement; Mr. Bungle, Alice In Chains, Frank Zappa, System Of A Down, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, Daft Punk, Faith No More, Frank Sinatra, Nine Inch Nails, Rush… there is no end to the list. This is an alternative metal act going progressive, avantgarde, pop, experimental, and, quite frankly, batshit crazy. Being a Jack of all trades is one thing, but also being a master of almost all of them, like Avenged Sevenfold are on this album… well, that deserves respect and applause. And taking the risk to scare away the fanbase in favour of evolution and growth deserves all the praise in the world.
Honestly I really love this one. They pretty much completely changed their sound and even though much less of a metal record than any of the ones before I think it’s the best thing they’ve done so far. Don’t expect it to be well received here but it is creative and fresh sound from them.
Are the vocals autotuned (processed somehow, what's going on here?) on the last few songs, or am I hearing things? Rather jarring on the ears TBH.
It's definitely processed in moments, but I assumed it's intentional at least in some instances, particularly in Cosmic where there's both effects-laden and 'natural' vocals from Shadows at the same time
Crazy weird shit but excellent shit, from one of the most disliked bands in the scene. I honestly always liked them not just because they are all talented musicians but also for changing a bit on their style for every album.
It's an odder album than The Stage, but I respect them for being bold. Not enough of it is clicking with me (at least to start with) to firmly embrace it, but I do like I decent amount of it, and appreciate what they're trying with some of the rest

Not Cosmic, but songs 9 and 10.

I thought the two primary purposes for the internet were cat memes and overreactions.
Musically, the album is flawless. Whether it is metal music is another matter. The vocals (where they are without effect) are perfect. The producers' desire to make an album that is outside the conventional understanding of heavy rock is evident. In my opinion, this album is aimed at the fens of alternative/progressive rock stars like Muse.
Tbh, this particular album does deserve the cool cover.
I listened to this one first thing in the morning for some reason, and I have had another two full plays till now. I am surprised and impressed. I never liked anything from this band, but this album is wild.
Really digging the experimentalism here, but I'm fairly disappointed with the production. The voice sounds weird and lacks punch, the kick is too high in the mix and the guitars are a bit low. Overall this underwhelming production doesn't help glueing together the parts when there's a sudden change in the song, they feel disjointed instead of surprising. There are also some moments where the production shines, but overall I think this new approach doesn't work for their sound.

Taste the DARK...
... and you'll live FOREVER!
Very well done, I thought this band was still making simple music, but no, they are adding elegance and progressive stuff. Are they risking their commercial success to make art? Not every band does that.
Yep, definitely a weird one this, I went into the album blindly without listening to any singles first hand, and it's not at all what I expected. They made a very bold experimental move here with this, I greatly admire their ambitious effort at pulling away from the comfort zone. and it kinda works well for the most part. I'm not keen on some parts of the album but there's certainly some moments that I find intriguing.
