Wow, your rating surprises me. I have listened to the full album one time and I really liked it. But I didn't find anything that makes it so much better than the other Obituary albums in this first listen. You sure evoked much interest to listen to it some more.
Something that I noticed immediately is that the bass is VERY loud in the mix, imho too loud. I liked the sawing guitar sound with not so loud bass better...

yes I agree with you...the production is a downer in a non so cool way of things, though it grew on me over time.

I'll be seeing them live next month. I can't wait to hear these new songs performed live.

PLEASE!!! it's a great album sure..but PLEASE don't set your expectations ultra super high because when that stuff happens people just expects godlike things and when they receive an incredibly amazing album they end up being dissapointed.

I am a very big obituary fan, couldn't resist to listen to their new album...for all who appreciate obituary's music let me tell you that you won't be disappointed, this album might be the closest to the "cause of death" era bringing back that old school sound that modern bands lack these days...this album has to be part of all who listen to the old death metal ways...to tell you the truth i have always worship "cause of death" as obituary's finest but "xecutioner's return" is the only obituary album that doesn't make me miss james murphy on guitars (him being one of my favorites guitarist, and influence of all time) "xecutioner's return" is what the name says...the executioner has returned to wipe out the mainstream softy, depressed-death metal out there that people these days like to listen.
9/10 and long time I don't feel this way for a death metal album...hails to obituary, I'll be at the store for a copy of the new album no doubt.

It is indeed an amazing album. Also a great and accurate review.
This album has finally reached the same DM level of Slowly We Rot and Cause Of Death.
Also for me the best 2007 Death Metal album (still, so far, but a lot will have to happen to top this album...)

Okay, all in all this is very decent release but is just about 15 years late. They should have released this sort of stuff in 1992 instead of The End Complete and everything after. Now it is just way too dated and totally nopt original by their own standards.
Giving this album its proper place in history I would rate with just a 7 overall. Had it been released in 1992 it would certainly have deserved a 9, but alas, we're 15 years on.

I dont understand your reasoning at all, sure its influental values would be greater if it was released then, but its quality as an album doesnt decrease just because it wasnt released in 1992, thats an absurd though..

For me the overall quality impression does decrease because it doesn't bring anything new at all although its execution is alright.
Rating it I would say:
performance 9
songwriting 8
originality 7
production 6
overall 7

This is the funniest thing ive seen in Metalstorm...listen up, what we really need these days is that oldschool (15 year old...whatever) sound, you should thank Obituary stead of being so negative. This album is a flashback that tell us how gay music these days is, Metalcore and all that Emocore shit out there, the title of the album says it all and hopefully it brings that late 80s/90s generation back...Death metal isn't Death metal anymore everything sounds industrial and computerized...We don't need anything "new" from Obituary, in a way they created this "15 year old" sound that we all waited many years to have a taste of it once again...this album is a 9 will remain a 9 in 2012 and still a 9 in 2030...why? because it remains true to its roots and origins and brought back what we all waited for...period

Ralph Santolla is the man. That guy should just go from band to band to help everyone out.
I don't think this sounds THAT much like their older albums. The guitar solos definitely aren't the same style as they were on their first two albums, and Cause of Death seemed to be mostly filled with instrumentals, just not of the shredding variety.
Another thing I want to point out is that Tardy's vox sound much better than they do on Frozen in Time.
After hearing new Malevolent Creation and Obituary, 2007 doesn't seem that bad

2007 has been a bland year for Death Metal? I can't even understand how you can say that. We have this new offering from Obituary [which is excellent], Behemoth has released, probably, the best album of their career, and up and coming act Job For A Cowboy has been crushing heads with "Genesis" [I don't care if their "Doom EP" was Metalcore, their debut is DEATH METAL!] and we have Nile leading an assault on the ears of mortal men as well. I've seen much more recognition for the genre this year than the last. It's breaking into the mainstream just as Black Metal has and even though it's a slow process, the underground Metal scene is going to surface and wipe away the disgusting emo facade. Look around at the kids, the albums being put out, the publicity, it's on the rise like never before. Hopefully we'll see some changes in the music scene in the next couple of years and more people will appreciate the greatness of albums such as this. I'm glad to see Obituary has returned to the forefront and are ready to kick ass again.

My Xecutioner's Return is blank, nothing on to play. This is the first time I have ever bought a CD and put it in the CD player and nothin. I was fucking pissed, so I ran back to the store, raised hell and walked out with a free cd. Best fucking growling I ever did and the fucking CD is worth it.

I can't, for the life of me, understand what's so good about Obituary. I've listened to this album many times before under different names, and sometimes done better. Agreed about Evil Ways, but this not, definitely NOT the best Death Metal album this year.
6/10

I've listened album twice thru and i'lld say that it really puts Obituary back to it's golden days of youth. Cause of Death is simply the best album , because of Alan West. Xecutioner's Return , Ill'd say , holds tie with The End Complete , which still had that gloomy and evil Obituary Death Metal sound. On this album how ever I began to miss most of those good old agonizing quitar sawing solos with lots of vibrato bar tricks. Santallo's solos are too tidy and won't fit in Obituary mould (on my opinion). Even that his history is in one of the most essential Death metal bands in the world, I still prefer the "Western sound".
Album is still pretty great. There isn't many bad songs and they all are filled with pretty catchy Obituary-style self-repeating bone-breaking riffs. They have gain back the gloomy atmosphere of their 80's and early 90's. Bass is mixed loud, but doesn't really concern me, although I prefer the sharp gain sounds of the early days.
ONE THING'S FOR SURE : No one hasn't even yet beaten the "wild boar- slaughter" sound of John Tardy.
Xecutioner's return is quite telling name for this album , it is Obituary's comeback and proceeding to the better.
Worth 9/10 for giving new hope.
Certainly the potential club or festival gig at the Summer here in Finland's wilderness would be well worth the wait. I remember Donald mentioning, that Finland really reminded him of Florida's forests and marshes.
