Keeping it only music-wise, 2020 is shaping up to be a beast of a year.

So if this won't be the best record of the year, then what can we even still believe in?

Quite enjoying this. No more black metal but they went all out with the weirdo prog style and the synths this time are just amazing.

Gentle, atmospheric, space rock-ish to the bone... No black metal rip-offs in sight, for good...

If their older albums were rip-offs, can you name those similar but better bands?

I'll give it a try but I haven't cared about any HSN album since the first.

Who exactly were they ripping off on prior releases?

This is really good. I enjoyed the black metal, but don't find myself liking this any less (although I'm sure it will bother some people.) I'd be tempted to just call this dark psychedelic rock. But it's really enjoyable, whatever the label.
One of the best of '20 thus far

Oh, god! Never intended to use such a word it was autocorrect or something... This band is unique. I mean they don't have any black metal elements now ...

"Crossroads" gives me major Borknagar vibes.
I remember not particularly caring for their first few albums (maybe they came at the wrong point in my musical taste's development), but this is very enjoyable prog
Edit: I see now that Lars Nedlund featured on Crossroads, that's why it sounds so Borknagar-ish

Very different from what I would usually listen to but I gotta say this album is amazing. One of the few clean singers I like and a lot of great ideas/melodies.

Be sure to review the deluxe version with the Incense Swirls (Synthwave Remix) and Ever-Shifting Tunnels.
I thoroughly enjoy this album and the bonus tracks lifts the album even more. I would even go as far to claim that Ever-Shifting Tunnels is by far the best song on the album.

I will. I agree that it's worth buying the digipak for these two songs, and I also like "Ever-Shifting Tunnels" a lot.

Hail Spirit Borknagar
It seems so similar to True North. This band was unique once. Now it's just like any other prog mistake

I would advise you to listen to an album before you comment on it. There is no way you listened to eden in reverse and find out it's similar to Borknagar (excluding of course the track where Borknagar singer is doing a guest, perhaps you didn't know this)

I had my suspicions, but didn't know this. I've actually heard the album 3 times already. So far it's just more boring prog to me. It's good enough for a re-listen though, so I'll tweak my rating as I go. Nothing grabs me at all so far though

Without the black metal moments, they're just prog metal/rock now and I find it quite boring.

Without trying to convince anyone that this album is better than they think, I started making sense of it after 7-8 listens. I have now played it more than 30 times (once every day or even more, that is) and not because I will review it but because I really, really like it.
I was very disappointed after my first spin. I even sent this PM to Radu:
"I am baffled with the new HSN. Upon first listen yesterday I hated it. I gave it a second listen just now and I enjoyed it a lot more. It's like a completely different band, there is no bm to be found, but it is proggy, spacey, sci-fiey, psychedeliquey and trippy. And very synthy.
What a fucking headache this one's gonna give me..."
My opinion has changed 180 degrees and you are going to read all about it in a few days (if you are interested, of course).
@Ball Fondlers: I really can't find anything remotely reminding of Borknagar, apart from "Crossroads".

Yeah, I've liked this more with each listen. I'm probably at about 10 listens at this point. Loved their first album. Their last 2 were mediocre imo but they've won me over again with this one.

Yes, I did write that comment during that song. A lot of other tracks remind me of other bands too. Thy Catafalque on "The Devil's Blind Spot". Opeth on "The First Ape on New Earth".
I'm convinced enough to give it more listens though. I've been turned around on albums before

I can't stand the large majority of prog metal, but to anyone saying that now without the black metal HSN sound like "just another boring prog metal band", uh...... NO. That's just false. This is a pretty unique take on prog metal if you ask me, and if I'm wrong find me another 2 or 3 bands or albums that sound like this.
