It wend down to 17 in 1999, and 14 in 2000

the 1997 season had 22 teams between the 2 comps

There were 20 teams in the NRL/ARL in 1995, 1996 and 1998. 1997 had 2 seperate leagues after a split

I hope none one will do as Argentina few years ago, add 30 teams 10 years ago in to level and have quiescent in relegation , otherwise River never would leave

the 17th team was added last year. There's probably an 18th team coming in a few years
